AN art careers programme is inviting applications from young people for next year.

The Studio Morland’s Saturday Art Club 2023 follows a pilot programme this year, which they said was highly successful, and saw 15 13-18-year-olds local to the studio’s base in Penrith take part, and gave them the chance to exhibit their work at Somerset House in London.

A taster afternoon on Saturday, December 10, from 2pm to 2:30pm, will aim to celebrate the work of this year’s students and invite interested students to come and see what is involved.

The so-called National Saturday Club is described by the studio as a unique opportunity to learn new skills, discover talents, meet new people, and find out more about further education, higher education, and rewarding careers in the arts.

The Studio Morland’s Saturday Art Club is the only one in Cumbria taking part in the national scheme.

It is open to local 13-16-year-olds led by professional artist Donna Campbell with support from student mentors aged 17-18 from local secondary schools.

The programme includes weekly sessions on Saturday afternoons, a masterclass with an expert artist, and artwork exhibited at Somerset House in London.

Students will, according to the studio, make and create artworks, gain access to insights and knowledge about future careers in the arts, build up their creative portfolios with an expert, hone specialist skills and speak to industry professionals to inspire their future careers.

Kate Brundrett, director of The Studio Morland, said: “I am so pleased with the success of this year’s Saturday Art Club and proud that The Studio Morland represents such a huge geographical area on a national map to provide this invaluable opportunity to our local young people.

“Donna is an excellent and experienced tutor and her dedication and commitment to the students and the programme are outstanding.

“Our incredibly talented students worked so hard and brilliantly together at their Saturday Art Club to make some fantastic, exhibition-quality work.

“I am beyond thrilled with its success.”

Anyone interested in joining the Saturday Art Club in 2023 is welcome to come to the celebration afternoon.
