A petition calling on the MP to take action on a prominent ‘pong’ has been delivered after reaching 200 signatures.

The ‘Penrith Pong’ comes from a big factory on the west side of the town that renders fish protein.

Omega Proteins runs the factory that is the bane of Mr Jeff Thomson, who put the petition together, and his fellow residents of Penrith.

Jeff said: “We simply want our MP to do something for his constituents who want clean, fresh air in the homes, their gardens, their lungs.

“Years of residents’ complains, petitions, calls for action, have failed to bring an end to odour leaks.

“We wait to see what action the MP for the area will take to a community petition directed solely at him.”

Leo Group, the parent company of Omega Proteins, defended itself: “Our odour hotline - where we attend calls within 20 minutes to check and verify the existence of perceived odours – is still operational.

“This has proved the existence of other odour sources in the area, which we are often wrongly blamed for.”

Dr Hudson said: “As someone who is proud to represent our brilliant communities across Penrith and The Border, regularly stands up for better environmental protection in the Commons chamber and as a member of the EFRA select committee,  I am more than aware of this situation we experience in Penrith and am passionate about the vital need for clean air.”
