A CARLISLE family have thanked the community for their generosity after a fundraiser in the name of their baby boy, who has a rare cancer, raised £1,365 to help with costs.

Parents to the twelve-month-old Jaxon, Andrew and Hayley Barnes, were left devastated following the diagnosis of their child's stage 3 Hepatoblastoma cancer only two weeks ago.

Jaxon is currently being treated at the RVI in Newcastle, and will remain there for the foreseeable as he is set to continue chemotherapy treatment this week - at the same time of his first birthday (August 24).

Due to Covid-19, the house for parents to stay at whilst visiting the hospital is operating at a reduced capacity, meaning it is only available for those in intensive care.

Hayley said at the time, the family are having to spend about £100 a day between paying for accommodation and continuous fuel costs.

With hopes of lending a helping hand, the family's close friend, Stacey Weaver, organised a fundraiser to try and reduce any additional financial costs - to which donations came flooding in.

Stacey shared a message to the gofundme page yesterday (August 24), which read: "Jaxon is surrounded by love and strength from his family and the wonderful staff caring for him. Once again thank you for all your love, support and generous donations."

Jaxon's mother, Hayley Barnes, said: "It's amazing that it's raised that sort of money and it's still on-going, we're so thankful.

"What we are going to do is when all of this is finished, we want to set up a foundation to do more research; regularly raise awareness and fundraise into this child cancer that not many people know about.

"The doctor said he normally has one case of this a year on average, so we want to spread the word about it - the more awareness we can create the better," she said.

Hayley said they have a bit more of an idea when it comes to Jaxon's treatment now, meaning they will have to be at the hospital a couple days of the week - every week for the next six months or so - all dependent on whether or not Jaxon will need a liver transplant.

The donations page is still open for anyone who wishes to contribute and can be accessed via: https://gofund.me/0e081d80
