BARROW AFC fans are facing a huge hike in the cost of travelling to away games, figures have shown.

According to research conducted by Saxo Markets on the current cost of living crisis, Bluebirds supporters will have to stump up an average of £1,536.36 in fuel costs if they travel by car to every away match in 2022/23, the second highest travel bill in Skybet League Two.

This means an increase of £431.34 on last season, based on the rising costs of fuel and geographical location compared to other League Two grounds - over £100 more than the cost of a full-price Adult season ticket.

Travelling fans of Cumbrian neighbours Carlisle United face the highest bill, at £1,605.47, while Mansfield Town's supporters, based in the Midlands, will pay the least, at £920.85.

Steve Herbert, chair of the Bluebirds Trust, said: "The cost of fuel and indeed the cost of living, in general, will have a big impact on fans' ability to travel.

"We run most of the away travel and last season had a scheme to allow under 16s free anywhere, to enable families to afford to follow the Bluebirds.

"We took 332 young people for free.

"This year we are doing it again but have needed to raise funds and get sponsors to do so.

"Thanks to Unite, the Community Fund, Ambrose Hotel and Leitch Construction as well as hundreds of fans who donated, we've already carried over 100 kids free in the first two away games.

"Football is about shared memories and a sense of identity.

"These children will never forget the other night in Blackpool.

"It's our job as a Supporters Trust to help with that and grow the support.

"We are lucky as Barrow football people stick together.

"Even this Saturday to Sutton we had fans paying for seats on the bus so others could go.

"It's that sense of unity and solidarity that helps us through difficult times and the journey back to where we are now.

"It will also sustain us going forward."
