FOR this weeks nostalgia we looked back at what our high streets used to look like. We found a collection of photos from the 1960s showing some of the most popular stores at the time.

Some of the photos show Marks and Spencers, which is a still a token of our high streets. The front of the shop looks different than what we are used to seeing now, and does not have the inclusion of the foodhall which was added in 2016. However, in the 60s, Marks and Sparks was one of the most popular shops, you can see people flooding in and out.

Other shops in the pictures include Bata. This compnay had a large shoe factory in Maryport. Tomas Bata, from Zlin, Czechoslovakia, chose Maryport as the most northerly outpost for his shoe empire, operating a factory at Grasslot from 1940 to 1980.

One of the town’s biggest employers, it had over 2,000 staff and the shoe shop that opened in Maryport in the 60s seemed very popular.

The Lanes shopping centre opened in Carlisle around 20 years later and changed the high street there, again.

However, these vintage looking shops hopefully give you some nostalgic feels of what once was.
