AS runners prepare for the London Marathon in October, supporters of unpaid carer charities in Cumbria are also getting into their stride, preparing for the Great North Run.

Emma Watson, 48, support worker for Young and Adult Carers with Carer Support Eden, knows the challenges of running the world-famous London Marathon, having completed the 26-mile course in 2019 to raise funds for the charity she works for.

Now she has persuaded her partner Mark Wilmott and three friends Paul Sinkingson, Gyles Lancaster and Caroline Goodwin to join her in the Great North Run.

Miss Watson said: "This is the first time we have run together. They are inspired by the work done by Carer Support Eden and want to support the charity.

"The Great North Run is one of the biggest fundraisers.

"We are running 3-4 times a week but, as we get into our 12-week training programme in June, that will increase as we introduce a long run on a Sunday, to be prepared for September 11 when we will be setting off on the Great North Run.

"It's not about time, it's about doing it - taking part in the run. However, I do hope to complete it within two-and-a-half hours."

West Cumbria Carers also have five people running in the Great North Run - and there is still time for you to join them to raise funds for the charity.

CEO of West Cumbria Carers, Angela Longrigg said: “The countdown to the North East’s biggest weekend of sport is on and you can be part of the action by signing up with team West Cumbria Carers.

"In true Geordie style, enjoy a running route of the city with high-energy entertainment, unbelievable crowd support, and local musicians providing the soundtrack to your run.

"It’s a party atmosphere from start to finish. Don’t miss out, sign up to join team West Cumbria Carers."

The charities provide a range of services to support and enhance the lives of unpaid carers of all ages in their area and are part of Carer Support Cumbria.

The Covid pandemic has had a massive impact on the lives and well-being of unpaid carers, increasing isolation and negatively affecting people's health and wellbeing.

The money raised by all the Carer Support runners will go towards one-to-one support, sitting service, wellbeing, support groups and counselling.
