A LOCAL charity is helping to tackle holiday hunger thanks to a new fund set up by Cumbrian born businessman Mike Wombwell.

The Allerdale Holiday, Activities and Food Fund is managed by Cumbria Community Foundation and will offer free food and fun activities for children and families through August.

The summer holidays can prove very challenging financially for struggling families who rely on free school meals during term time to ease monetary pressures.

The fund has given grants to more than 10 projects across areas including Maryport and Workington that are addressing food hunger. "I am always inspired by the commitment of local volunteers who are active in the local community," fund founder Mike Wombwell said.

"I am happy to make a contribution to support their efforts especially in these challenging times."

Two groups which have received funding through the scheme are the Cumberland Football Association with Workington Reds in the Community and West House in Workington.

After a day’s football with Workington Reds children are offered a recipe box so they can make a healthy meal at home.

Ray Sempill, football development officer for the Cumberland FA, said: "We recognise that times are particularly hard for families, so we are pleased to be able to provide some support and help to break down barriers to participation."

West House in Workington supports children and adults in Cumbria with disabilities can offer activities and a healthy meal for free due to the grant.

The fund is being managed by Cumbria Community Foundation who, with the help of businesses and individuals, have invested over £56million into local communities over the last 22 years.

"The summer holidays can be a really difficult time for families who are struggling. Food poverty is at the heart of the difficulties for many families," said Annalee Holliday, senior grants and programmes officer at Cumbria Community Foundation.

"The Allerdale Holiday, Activities & Food Fund means that children and young people not only don’t go hungry when term ends but also eat healthily and have fun."

The fund is still open for applications and community groups are urged to get in touch with Cumbria Community Foundation to find out more.
