PLANS have been lodged with the council to convert farm buildings in Wigton into use as a funeral directors business.

Allerdale Council has received an application to refurbish a barn at East End Farm, Wigton and to build new offices and consultation rooms for a funeral business.

The existing barn at East End Farm has fallen into “disrepair” and will need to be refurbished with remedial works carried out before the site can be reused.

East End Farm has been in existence for over 100 years in Wigton although the farmhouse and associated buildings have been demolished and replaced over time.

However there are currently no agricultural operations taking place on the site.

Plans to redevelop the site to house a funeral business are necessary as the DC Studholme funeral business has outgrown its existing premises.

In supporting statements submitted to the council, the applicant has said that the reason for the application is to allow the business “to be passed down to further generations” without operating from two sites.
