Cumbrian Nick Miller is celebrating after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games.

The Scotby star retained his title in the men's hammer with a throw of 76.43m.

Miller, 29, said he was proud of the achievement as he became the first Cumbrian to win gold at the Birmingham games.

The Carlisle athlete's winning throw saw him ahead of Canada's Ethan Katzberg and Alexandros Poursanidis of Cyprus, who took silver and bronze respectively.

Speaking after Saturday's final, Miller said: "I threw a little further on the Gold Coast [in 2018] but being at home and winning in front of a home crowd is really special.

“The energy at first was a bit like ‘oh wow, this is a lot’. But after the third round, moving into the top eight, it was nice to feel all the support from everybody.”

With a host of gold medals up for grabs, there are hopes that Miller's early success will have launched a 'Super Saturday' for Team England.

The Border Harrier added: “I’m incredibly proud. I’m sure we’ll have a few more later.

“My season has not been great far, a lot of injury and illness.

"To come out here and win in front of my family – my little niece is here, which is lovely – it’s nice to have a positive outcome.”
