I’M sure that locals are well aware of the increased amount of traffic in the city over the last few years, what with the constant tailbacks throughout the day, but how many have noticed that Carlisle has done away with the Highway Code?

Driving is now a free for all, the only rule is me, me, me.

Cars pull into major roads forcing other drivers to halt and let them progress.

Road markings mean nothing, just drive in the centre of the road and let oncoming traffic use the verges and gutters.

Red lights are laughed at or there are a lot of colour-blind drivers.

Speed Limit signs are ignored, as are disabled parking places in supermarket car parks.

Vehicles have no indicators and courtesy is a rarity, every time you go out in a car you experience examples of dangerous, blatant, ignorant and selfish driving and very little is being policed as it was when the volume of traffic was a lot less.

I suspect Cumberland Council or Carlisle City Council would make a fortune if they installed cameras at every traffic light in the city, more than enough money to pay for the purchase, installation, and monitoring of the same within the first six months.

Surely I can’t be the only one seeing this decline in motoring standards.
