AN award-winning gallery in Yorkshire will be saving thousands of pounds in future energy costs and reducing its carbon footprint, by investing in LED lighting, installed by LED Supply & Fit, in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.

The Hepworth Wakefield houses an outstanding art collection, and needs to ensure that the building is lit in such a way as to show the artworks off to their best advantage, while also avoiding any damage that exposure to artificial light might cause.

When the gallery was built, halogen lights were fitted throughout the large building, and they had long wished to change to LEDs to reduce their environmental impact and save costs, especially as energy prices have soared. It was a big investment to change their entire lighting system, which involved the installation of more than 700 fittings.

LED Supply & Fit worked with the gallery to show how much they would save over a ten-year period.

Through installing the LEDs, the gallery’s actual annual costs on energy is estimated to make a saving of £17,690.40. Over ten years, this will afford them a saving of more than £175,000.

They will be also saving a further £11,000 in servicing costs, as LED lighting does not require servicing, plus, LED Supply & Fit offer a full 5-year warranty on their LED luminaires.

Alan Lovett, Estates Manager for the Gallery, was delighted with the process and the result of the changeover, saying: “The Hepworth Wakefield is one of the largest purpose-built galleries in the UK, attracting many thousands of visitors to the region each year and celebrating the Wakefield district as the birthplace of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.

“We are committed to radically reducing our environmental footprint and inspiring our audiences to do the same. We are working to become carbon-neutral by 2030 in line with Wakefield Council’s ambition.

“An important step towards achieving this ambition was to replace the existing halogen lighting, both internally and externally, to LED. We were pleased to award the contract to do that to LED Supply & Fit who completed the replacement within three weeks, whilst ensuring the work did not affect gallery day-to-day operations and visitor experience.

“We found LED Supply & Fit  to be very competitive on their pricing, reliable and helpful, especially in providing advice on the best lighting options to generate the biggest savings.”
