A boxing club is raising money for new equipment to fill in the space of its planned extension.

Walking laps of Talkin Tarn will be members of the Carlisle Villa Amateur Boxing Club, who needed the extra space to cater to higher demand.

There are around 30 people who will be completing the sponsored walk around Talkin Tarn, which is 1.2 miles with the members of the club completing ten laps.

Jimmy Brennan who coaches at the club said: “We’re doubling the size of the gym.

“We’ve been given no funding for a long time but we have been lucky in the past five or six years with sell-out shows, and we’ve been able to save up some money to help pay for the extension.

“With this extension we will be able to take on more clients.

“We are full to capacity now without the extension.

“We now have the money to get the extension but because the material costs have gone through the roof recently we haven’t got the money to facilitate it and buy the equipment for it.”

They raised £100,000 but they need more money to pay for crucial equipment, like a ring, balls, bags and gloves to fill the space, making it a gym.

Yesterday, the club received confirmation there will be £9,800 awarded from the National Lottery to help cover the costs of the gym that is vital to the amateur boxing community in Carlisle and neighbouring towns and villages.

They hope to get the new part of the gym open and ready for September.

For the new equipment, the club is hoping to raise £20,000, of which they have raised £1,560 at the time of reporting.

The sponsored walk will take place on August 27, 2022, at 11am.
