A WHITEHAVEN man has been given a 28-day domestic violence protection order, banning him from contacting a woman.

Michael Newell, 39, of Queen Street, who was represented by defence lawyer Chris Toms during the hearing before magistrates in Carlisle, now faces being arrested if he flouts the non-contact order.

The order bars him from going to an address in Jefferson Park, Whitehaven, where the protected woman lives.

The idea behind such orders, which are made when magistrates believe that the defendant has on the balance of probabilities threatened or subjected the protected person with violence, is to give thos involved 'breathing space'.

The application for the order was made by Cumbria Police, whose specialist officers offer support and advice to alleged victims.
