CARLISLE’S Member of Parliament has revealed he will be supporting Rishi Sunak in the race to be the next Prime Minister.

Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is facing Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in the contest to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister when he steps down in the Autumn.

And as the contest heats-up, Carlisle MP John Stevenson has revealed he will be supporting Mr Sunak for Prime Minister.

Mr Stevenson previously supported Tom Tugendhat MP but has taken time to consider which candidate to endorse after Mr Tugendhat was eliminated from the running.

Mr Stevenson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “The reason I’ve decided to support Rishi is I think he’s got the experience and ability to be a good Prime Minister and run the Government, efficiently and effectively. I think his economic policies are realistic and achievable.”

Mr Stevenson said that Mr Sunak is “very aware of the challenges” economically and will “steer a financially prudent course.”

He added that Mr Sunak "hasn't shied away from the challenge of interviews with people like Andrew Neil."
