A road has been closed as an emergency measure.
According to Cumbria County Council, the C3029 Beacon Edge, in Penrith, is the subject of an 'emergency road closure', which has the potential to result in 'gas escape'.
The emergency gas works are set to continue until Tuesday, August 16.
Northern Gas Network is responsible for maintaining the gas networks in the area.
This has been warned in the form of a 21-day notice issued by the council, which said the road needed to be closed because of 'the likelihood of danger to the public as a result of gas escape'.
Beacon Edge from its junction with Fell Lane, extending in a westerly direction for a total distance of approximately 245 metres, is to remain closed.
Alternative routes for vehicles are available via Wordsworth Street, Meeting House Lane, and Fell Lane.
