A woman is going to run in the Great North Run in memory of her uncle who died while walking in the Lakes.

Laura Campbell is running in the Great North Run, the world’s second biggest half marathon in terms of attendance, in memory of her uncle, Peter Wainwright, who died suddenly and tragically on Scafell Pike.

Laura is raising money for the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, whose members were called out to Peter on the mountain.

Peter, who was from Formby in Merseyside, passed away in October last year.

A spokesperson from Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said: “In October last year the team was called to a walker who had tragically suddenly passed away on Scafell Pike.

“His Niece, Laura Campbell, has decided to run this year’s Great North Run in memory of Peter Wainwright and at the same time raise funds for our team.

“We wish Laura the best of luck with her challenge and thank her for thinking of us.”

Speaking of the incident, Laura, from Liverpool, said: “On October 6 he went out with his friend on a day trip to Scafell.

“He was a really experienced walker but 50 metres from the summit he collapsed.

“Unfortunately, he died.

“The air ambulance brought him down and got in touch with his next of kin, which was my auntie.

“It was a cardiac arrest, it was just his time, there was nothing anyone could do.

“Afterwards, the mountain rescue team were great in helping my auntie.

“They were quite active in answering all the questions she had and offering support.”

On her upcoming run, she said she had experience in her younger years, but it’s looking a bit daunting.

She’s recently joined a running club to get practice in.

The Great North Run happens every year every September, with this year’s event happening on September 11.

Participants run between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields.

She added: “I’ve been told by everyone that the crowd will carry me on.

“I know Peter will be chuffed to bits that I’m doing this.”
