Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious crash which left a woman in hospital.

The crash happened on the A66, near to the County Durham border yesterday afternoon (Aug 1).

A spokesperson from Cumbria police said: "The collision occurred eastbound on the A66 at Stainmore, between Brough and Bowes, at around 4:30pm.

"It involved a yellow Fiat Panda and a white Nissan Qashqai

"As a result of the collision, the driver of the Fiat Panda, a 31-year-old woman from the local area suffered serious injuries and was flown to the James Cook Hospital.

"The driver of the Nissan was treated for minor injuries at Carlisle Infirmary.

"The road was closed for a number of hours whilst a forensic collision investigation and recovery was carried out.

"The road reopened shortly after 12:30am today (2 Aug)."

A spokesperson from GNAAS said: "Our critical care teams from our Langwathby base and Teesside base were activated yesterday evening to reports of a road traffic collision on the A66 Stainmore and both arrived on scene at approximately 5pm.

"A patient was assessed and treated by our team and airlifted to hospital."
