AFTER a few days of extreme heat we’ve just had a taste of what is coming – like it or not, climate change is here.
We’ve just seen the highest temperatures recorded all over Britain; London was burning; Europe and America are burning; and time is running out to do anything meaningful to stop the march of climate change.
The question is: have we got the stomach for it?
Big personal sacrifices will need to be made but will we reduce foreign holidays? Reduce choice? No school runs? No strawberries at Christmas? No coal mines for red wall areas to save Tory seats?
The short answer is no, not a chance – as long as we live in a capitalist society nothing will change. The latest Tory leadership race has proved that.
Capitalism created global warming, the quest for more and more has destroyed the fine balance of nature.
There’s an old native American proverb: “Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish been caught and the last stream poisoned will we realise we can’t eat money.”
