Colin May believes that if you live in a community you are part of that community, and puts his beliefs into action.

From Canada, Colin moved to the UK five years ago. And if he believes in making a difference he certainly has!

He has become a community champion, fighting for Denton Holme, for Carlisle and, indeed, the county through the political party Putting Cumbria First.

"We didn't contest any of the seats in the recent local government elections because nobody knows what will happen with the new unitary authority - but we haven't gone away."

One of Colin's ventures was organising a community garden run by volunteers.

The garden grows produce for the Cornerstone Food Bank.

He said: "It is run entirely by volunteers who are trying to supply those who use the foodbank with healthy vegetables that are grown locally.

"We are hoping to extend so we can grow food for the pensioners’ lunch at the community centre. It’s been set up to help others in the community."

As well as that, Colin organised the area's first Christmas festival, which was such a success that it is bound to continue.

He has helped organised volunteers to clean the streets of Carlisle.

Colin has also campaigned for a reduction in the speed limit in Denton Holme, claiming that a 20mph speed would make the area safer for everyone.

He also wants Denton Holme to be given more power to decide its own fate by having its own parish council.

Colin is assistant manager of Berghaus Ltd, the outdoor clothing and equipment firm: "Three generations of my family have run a retail business so that's something I know."

And bringing a community together is something else he seems expert at!
