A CARLISLE primary school is celebrating a good Ofsted report following a recent inspection - which praised 'skilful' staff, an 'ambitious' curriculum and 'happy' pupils.

Houghton CofE School in Houghton was inspected by the regulator on March 15 and 16.

The Ofsted report said: "Pupils are happy to attend school. They appreciate that their teachers are friendly and welcoming.

"Pupils know that staff are there to help and take good care of them. This helps pupils to feel safe in school."

The report praised the pupils' behaviour and the way the school leaders make learning 'a priority' for the school, though it did add that in a 'small number' of areas, expectations of the pupils and what they could achieve 'aren't high enough'.

Head teacher Stephen Johnston said: "We are delighted with our recent Ofsted report. We are really proud of all of the staff and children who have been working incredibly hard, especially through the unique challenges of the last two years.

"Our children and staff are extremely proud of their school and we are very well supported by our families and whole school community.

"We are looking forward to building on our achievements next year and beyond."

Chair of governors Paul Turney added: “I am really pleased that this Ofsted report highlights the high standards that the whole school community sets themselves and recognises both the exceptional staff team here at Houghton and the fantastic pupils we have at school."
