A PENRITH man accused of an attempted robbery has been granted by bail following a hearing at Carlisle’s Rickergate Magistrates’ Court.

Neil Bailey, 42, of Princes Court, Penrith, is facing three allegations, all linked to the alleged robbery attempt which prosecutors say happened in the town centre on July 24. The three allegations are:

  • That he attempted to rob a manager from the B&M store in Penrith at 4.30pm on July 24, intending to steal a laptop.
  • That he caused criminal damage to a police vehicle.
  • And that he obstructed a police constable.

The defendant did not formally enter any pleas.

After hearing an outline of the allegations, magistrates granted the defendant bail until his case is dealt with at Carlisle Crown Court, the date for that hearing having been set as August 26. There are conditions to that bail.

They include a condition to live and sleep at his current address; that he is to have no contact with the alleged victim; and that he does not enter the B&M store involved in the attempted robbery allegation.

Nor can he go into the Bluebell Lane car park near the store. He must observe a 6pm to 6am curfew which will electronically monitored while on bail.

Bailey will be asked to enter his pleas when he is next in court. The defendant was represented in court by defence lawyer John Smith.
