TWO Workington men are facing 'inevitable' jail sentences after they admitted two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Jamie Elston, 31, of Iredale Crescent, and David Ratcliffe, 32, of Falcon Place, each admitted two allegations of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to two men in Workington on New Year’s Day.

No details were outlined at Carlisle Crown Court of the assaults but both victims are understood to have been seriously injured.

Judge Nicholas Barker ruled that background reports should be prepared on each defendant before sentence is passed. There will also be a psychiatric report prepared on Elston before he is sentenced, said the judge.

Judge Barker told the defendants: “You have both had the good sense to plead guilty to these charges, which are extremely serious offences.

“You will be given credit for pleading guilty when you are sentenced. I am going to adjourn sentence until September 28 and order pre-sentence reports in both your cases. In your case, Elston, there will also be a psychiatric report.

“You don’t need me to tell you that there will be an inevitable sentence or imprisonment imposed on you but the court will take into account your pleas and all the relevant material.”

He remanded both men in custody.

During the ten minute hearing, both men spoke only to confirm their personal details and to enter their guilty pleas.
