CRIME has risen over the last year in Carlisle, official police records reveal.

Cumbria Constabulary recorded 10,295 offences in Carlisle in the 12 months to March, according to the Office for National Statistics.

That was an increase of 16% compared to the previous year, when there were 8,838.

And, at 94.9 crimes per 1,000 people, that was higher than the rate across England and Wales, which stood at 89.3.

Of the crimes recorded in the area over the last 12 months, 430 were sexual offences – an increase of 34% from the year before.

Meanwhile, violent crime has risen in the area, from 3,820 to 4,522 over this period.

One of the main factors behind this increase was the rise in violence with injury, which rose by 28%, from 932 incidents to 1,196.

And theft offences rose by 19%, with 2,033 incidents recorded in the 12 months to March.

At 18.7 crimes per 1,000 people, that was lower than the rate across England and Wales, which stood at 25.1.

Crimes recorded in Carlisle included:

430 sexual offences, a rise of 34%

1,474 incidents of criminal damage and arson, up 15%

246 drug offences, down 10%

76 possession of weapons such as firearms or knives, an increase of seven

1,267 public order offences, up 13%

2,033 theft offences, a rise of 19%

1,615 stalking and harassment offences, up 19%
