The wait is over and the summer break have now begun, this weekend families will be jetting off to a sunny paradise.

After what has been a difficult two years, people in Cumbria can now finally enjoy a holiday abroad.

Here at Newsquest we wanted to find out what destinations are the most popular for people in our area.

Europe seems to be the most popular place to head to but it also seems people are beginning to go a bit further a field.

Travel agents in Whitehaven, Workington and Carlisle have been interviewed to find out which are the top places to go.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Travel in Whitehaven said: "Our top destinations this summer so far are Benidorm, Tenerife, Turkey and Majorca."

Speaking to staff at Craig Travel in Workington we had similar findings with Benidorm, Tenerife, Majorca and Turkey all listed again with the addition of New York as another top place to visit.

A spokesperson from Hays Travel in Carlisle said: "We do lots of cruises but we have also found Turkey, New York, Spain and Greece to be very popular holiday spots."

It seems that us Cumbrians love to get away and enjoy the summer break, with Benidorm and Tenerife being some of the most popular with people on the west coast.

Whilst those in Carlisle seem to be venturing to different parts of the continent and also proving cruises are still popular.

It's also very interesting to see that New York seems to be the most visited place for us Cumbrians outside of Europe.
