The recent surge in covid infections has impacted hospitals and patients as some wards have had to be closed to visitors to manage the spread.

There are approximately 70 patients with the virus in hospitals run by North Cumbria Integrated Care, including the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

A spokesman said: “In line with the rise of community infections our hospitals have seen an increase in covid outbreaks and patients testing positive for the virus. We are currently caring for around 70 patients with the virus.

"We know how important visiting is for patients and what a worrying and anxious time it is for patients.

"We are open for visiting by appointment across all our inpatient wards, however, when an outbreak occurs we close the ward to visitors in order to manage the outbreak as effectively as possible."

All ward closures are advertised on the group's website (www.ncic.nhs.uk).

"For exceptional circumstances – for example end of life or for mental health support, visiting is allowed on closed wards by appointment with the ward manager however strict infection prevention measures must be followed," said the spokesman.

"We urge anyone who is visiting patients to stay away if they feel ill in any way and, while masks are voluntary, we strongly advise wearing one when you are in a ward."

For those who are not able to visit their loved ones or relatives they are able to video call, with support from ward staff.

"You are also able to send your loved one a message through the patient advice and liaison team: pals@ncic.nhs.uk," said the spokesman.
