CUMBRIANS have basked in sunshine today as record-breaking temperatures soared in today's heatwave.

Carlisle residents baked in sweltering 34.4 degrees celsius and Keswick recorded 33.2 degrees celsius heat whilst Shap recorded 31.6.

Today's temperature beats the last hottest day in Carlisle which was July 25 2019 when a temperature of 32.4 degrees Celsius was recorded.

After a few days of stifling weather temperatures are expected to drop down to 23 degrees celsius in Carlisle.

Meanwhile emergency services have been on standby today as Cumbrians and tourists took advantage of the sunshine with a visit to the Lake District or the county's famous beaches. Police and Cumbria and Fire and Rescue have reported only a few callouts and have been giving tips on how to cope with high temperatures.
