A COCKERMOUTH man is facing hefty legal costs and a 120-day booze ban after he admitted assaulting a woman.

Gareth Howard Skillen, 39, originally denied the allegation but changed his plea to guilty when he appeared before magistrates in Workington. He committed the offence on October 31 last year.

The defendant, of Melbreak Avenue, Cockermouth, was told that as part of his community order he must comply with an alcohol monitoring requirement which will be electronically monitored.

He will also have to observe a two-day curfew so that the alcohol tag can be fitted to his ankle. Magistrates also imposed a restraining order, banning any contact with the victim.

This will remain in place until January 12, 2023. Magistrates also ruled that Skillen must pay the victim £1,250 compensation, £500 prosecution costs, and a £95 victim surcharge.

The defendant, represented in court by defence lawyer John Cooper, now owes the court a total of £1,845.
