A CARLISLE man who secretly recorded a woman for the purpose of “sexual gratification” has been warned that he faces a possible jail term.

Jacek Kuliga, 39, admitted the offence when he appeared before the city’s crown court, where a judge issued the jail warning but pointed out also that custody was not likely given the defendant is a man of previous good character.

He committed the offence in Penrith on January 23.

The charge stated that, without the consent or knowledge of the person who was being filmed, he “recorded a person [a woman] doing a private act with the intention that he would obtain sexual gratification."

Recorder Samantha Presland adjourned the case for a background report. Prosecutor Kim Whittlestone told the court that the defendant is a man of previous good character.

Recorder Presland stressed that custody remains a possibility, given that sentencing guidelines for the offence admitted by Kuliga is a jail term of 26 weeks. His sentence will be reduced to reflect his guilty plea.

But the pre-sentence report to be done by the Probation Service should examine all sentencing options, said the judge.

She commented that the offence before the court represented a “total and utter objectification” of women. She said it was exasperating that people have access to “amazing technology” but then used it for such “base things.”

The Recorder adjourned sentencing Kuliga, of Broadoaks Grange, Botcherby, Carlisle, until August 22, granting him bail with a condition that he has no contact with the victim. Voyeurism is defined as an offence under the 2003 Sexual Offences Act.
