A THIRTY-seven-year-old Carlisle man has been jailed after he admitted sending a woman grossly offensive or menacing messages.

Neil Monkhouse, of Partridge Place, committed the offence on July 5, but court records do not specify the nature of the message.

District Judge John Temperley ordered that Monkhouse should pay his victim £100 in compensation.

The defendant was jailed for ten weeks, with the judge saying the offence was so serious because it involved 'multiple messages'.

The judge imposed a one-year restraining order banning any contact with the victim.

The offence was aggravated by Monkhouse’s criminal record and by the fact that the defendant was on licence following previous offending at the time.

Monkhouse was represented in court by defence lawyer Mark Shepherd.

There was no order for costs because of the compensation order, which must be paid at a rate of £20 per month.
