A pub has helped to raise money for a group of young cheerleaders off to compete in Florida next year.

Cheer Force Knights Maryport's team Lady Supremacy will be competing over in the States next year and is looking to raise money to support their trip.

Peter Sisson, whose daughter and granddaughter are both in the team, has been helping with the fundraising efforts.

Peter has worked alongside his local pub, the Anchor Vaults in Whitehaven, to sell their old pub sign.

The sign was bought this week by Gary Mckeiting of Workington, who paid £125 towards the cause.

Mr Sisson said: "Myself and the landlady Andrea have been doing lots in the pub to help to raise money.

"Some of our ideas have been football cards and other forms of fundraising, we realised the old pub sign wasn't getting used anymore and decided to sell it.

"We managed to get a bid of £125 from Gary Mckeating, he came to the pub this week to present us with the money.

"I'm not sure how much we've managed to raise so far, but I'm trying to get a lot of people in the area involved with the fundraising.

"We're very pleased with getting £125 donated and I met up with Gary in the Anchor Vaults on Tuesday to accept the donation.

"Andrea and I will collect together all of the money raised in the pub over the next week and send it through to the cheerleaders at Maryport."

Cheerleading club director Olivia Scholey said fundraising ideas so far have included sponsored walks, bingo nights and live music events.

All of the girls on the team were thrilled to hear the news that they'd got through to the competition.

Ms Scholey added: "I am still confident that they'll all do really well, it is such an amazing achievement in itself to get this far. Whatever happens when we are there will only add on to everything that we've achieved so far."
