AN 84-year-old man was severely injured after falling off a path and into a lake.

The man fell off the lakeshore path and into Buttermere before passers-by got in the water and helped push him onto the solid-ground shore while he was floating on the water.

He fell two metres and hit his head; it would have been difficult to get him back on the path so the passers-by put the man on a plank so he was above the water.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT) members arrived shortly afterwards after being called out yesterday (July 11) at around 1:30 pm.

A spokesperson from CMRT said: "The casualty was conscious, with numerous lacerations.

"The Team treated his injuries and due to their potential severity requested an air ambulance for rapid evacuation to hospital.

"Helimed 58 was on scene by 3:30pm, and the casualty was transferred to the helicopter for onward transport to the Cumberland Infirmary.

"CMRT would like to thank Helimed 58 for their rapid response time, along with the passers-by who assisted the gentleman from the lake following his fall.

"The team would like to wish the casualty a speedy recovery."
