THE Chairman of Skelton Show has expressed disappointment that the annual agricultural event has had to be cancelled.
Organisers of the popular event had to to make the early morning call after torrential downpours had waterlogged the showground at Hutton in the Forest near Penrith.
Colin Atkinson, chairman of Skelton Show said: "I am absolutely gutted that Skelton Show couldn't go ahead.
"After the rain yesterday the committee took the brave decision to cancel the show.
"We did everything we could.
"We worked into the night to try and make the site safe which included putting down two articulated loads of woodchips, but it didn't help.
"After the heavy rain overnight we made an inspection at 6am and made the difficult decision to cancel the show to the safety of everyone.
"Despite the disappointment the show is in a healthy position and we will organise for July next year. "
A steady stream of competitors and show-goers were being turned away at the gate.
