THE hugely popular Skelton Show near Penrith has been cancelled due to rainfall.

Organisers claim it to be the biggest village show in the North East and Cumbria and it was expected to see 10,000 visitors today.

The event was due to make its return after two years due to the coronavirus pandemic but a waterlogged field has forced organisers to cancel.

Last night the show committee cancelled the popular horse classes on safety grounds.

Organisers said: Following further continuous rain overnight, the Committee have regretfully taken the decision to cancel ALL sections of the show on Health and Safety grounds."

"Skelton Show will NOT go ahead today."

Skelton Show has been running since the late 1800s and grown from a small local show held in the village to one of the major agricultural shows in Cumbria. It is held in the picturesque setting of the Old Park at Hutton in the Forest.
