AN angry Carlisle woman hurled two bottles and caused almost £1,500 damage to a car belonging to a neighbour who had 'smirked' at her moments earlier.

The city magistrates’ court heard how a dispute between residents boiled over on the evening of March 9 this year.

An eyewitness had seen a police incident in which a male was arrested at the Deer Park Road address of 24-year-old Lauren Thompson.

Officers left the area 15 minutes later.

Thompson was seen 'shouting and swearing' from a window towards the home of another woman.

After a white BMW pulled up outside, Thompson was seen to come briskly out of her address. In each hand she held a glass bottle and she threw these, one at a time, at the woman’s Suzuki after walking directly towards it.

“Both bottles smashed, causing a great deal of noise,” prosecutor Pam Ward told the court. “After she (Thompson) had thrown the bottles, she then went up to the white BMW and got into the vehicle. It accelerated quickly and drove up the street.”

There was damage to the roof and windscreen valued at £1,490.

Thompson admitted a criminal damage charge.

Tariq Khawam, defending, said a neighbourly argument underpinned the offence.

Neighbours had complained about loud music and the barking of two dogs at the home of Thompson.

She, in turn, believed a gate was deliberately left open, causing the pets to escape.

“She felt she was being observed and laughed at by the female neighbour,” said Mr Khawam.

After the BMW arrived, Thompson left her address carrying two bottles — one full and the other half-full.

“She saw the neighbour smirking at her and simply lost her temper as a result of what happened,” said Mr Khawam. “It was an impulsive act. She threw the bottles and she deeply regrets it.”

The neighbour had since “moved on”, the court heard, and the lawyer added: “There is unlikely to be any recurrence of this.”

Thompson was fined £120 and must pay £1,490 compensation for the damage caused.
