AS Carlisle has celebrated Armed Forces Day this week, we decided to take a trip down memory lane via our extensive photographic archives to see what the Armed Forces Day looked like across the county in the last decade.

Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Mike Mitchelson, was on hand to provide a 'citation of appreciation' followed by a brief speech to the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment at this year's Armed Forces Day.

"It's an important part of the national armed forces week, this is part of Carlisle's tribute to the armed forces.

"But past and present, we have to remember the people in the past who have made severe sacrifices and great bravery, and the current forces wherever they may be - we owe so much to their bravery," Mayor Mitchelson said.

"The citation of appreciation which is to thank the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment for all they do, especially as they are the armed force connected to Carlisle.

"I'm very honoured to be part of Carlisle on a day like this, it's great to see so many of the public turning out to visit the stalls, see some of the old vehicles and hopefully appreciate what the armed forces have done and continue to do," he said.

Indeed, since Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated in late June every year to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces, was first observed as Veterans' Day in 2006, the Cumbrian public and the overall British public has shown their appreciation for the living and fallen soldiers.

The name was changed to Armed Forces Day in 2009 in order to recognise cadets, reserves, families and charities that all make up the armed forces family.

Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much valued morale boost for the troops and their families.

This year's Armed Forces Day attracted troves of civilian onlookers, and next year's commemorations and celebrations won't be any different.
