A shop-worker has been fined £500 after selling alcohol to a 14-year-old.

Jaspreet Deo, 27, was working at Poundsavers on Hunters Drive in Seaton on November 13 last year, at the time of the offence.

Workington Magistrates’ Court heard that a test purchase operation was being carried out by police.

But Deo failed to ask a 14-year-old for ID when the teenager attempted to buy a four-pack of Kronenbourg lager.

The sale was witnessed by a police officer who spoke to Deo. The defendant, who was not the licence holder, then became apologetic.

He told the officer that he “honestly didn’t know” why he had not asked for ID.

Deo, of Hunters Drive, Seaton, pleaded guilty to selling alcohol to a person under 18 when he appeared before magistrates yesterday.

The defendant, who was unrepresented, said that it was “just a lapse of concentration”.

He was fined £500 and must pay £85 costs and a £50 victim surcharge.
