A free art exhibition has been installed to raise funds for the gallery hosting it.

Put on by the Carlisle and Border Art Society, it has been installed yesterday at the Tullie House in Carlisle and will run until Saturday, May 28.

The art on display is of a variety of topics, forms, and disciplines, and comes from mainly amateur artists, however, some professionals have taken part as well.

Their opening day was successful, seeing over 100 visitors.

Paintings and cards have been and are still being sold to raise money for the Tullie House museum and art gallery in Carlisle.

The exhibition is placed by the café and accessed through the café or the gardens.

Visiting in the afternoon, upon entry, vice chairman of the Carlisle and Border Arts Society, Carole Golightly, greets visitors, and said of the exhibition: “It has a variety of works, about 29 new artists are presented in the exhibition.“All the artists are from the Carlisle and borderlands area.

“Today, we’ve sold about five paintings and a selection of cards.”

Carole explained that paintings are sold for a price which has a dramatic range, from £30 to £350, depending on the piece.

Likewise, the artists are of a variety of ages, with one contributor as young as 15.

Carole is a painter of 30 years, and her colleague, Sue Parmley the treasurer at the society, who was also greeting guests and keeping count of visitors has been painting for a long time as well.

According to Sue’s figures, 120 people visited.

Carole continued: “It was a successful day.

“We have had some very nice things said about it.

“We have our main exhibition in Wetheral in October, this is a small scale exhibition in comparison, but we are hoping to do this exhibition once a year.”

Carole’s favourite paintings are ones of the society’s chair, Anne Kelly, and one by George McVitie which is placed highly on one of the walls.

The exhibition runs until May 28 and is open from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.
