A group of older walkers have been completing a huge challenge.

Walking the entire length of Hadrian's Wall is no short task for anyone of any fitness level,

But this group of self-admittedly older walkers have decided now is the time to complete the coast-to-coast scenic route of the north of England before they ‘reach an age’.

The Hadrian’s Wall Path is an 84-mile trail stretching coast to coast across northern England, from Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria on the west coast.

It takes generally anywhere from six to eight days on average to complete the trail, according to Global Adventure Challenges, who write: “If you are looking to walk the entire length of the Hadrian’s Wall path, this will take between 6-8 days depending on your fitness levels and experience.

“However, there are a range of different areas of Hadrian’s Wall you can explore, with treks taking anywhere from a couple of hours to a few days.”

Ann Bell, who is 79 years old, from Carlisle, has been, in parts, walking Hadrian’s Wall with three other walkers, her husband, Malcolm Bell, and some friends, Malcolm, Irene and Dot Armstrong.

Anne said: “It’s the first time we’ve walked the whole walk of the wall.

“My husband, my friend, and my other friend all decided to do it before we reached an age.

“It has been a really hard walk.”

Finishing their walk on Sunday, May 22, they had an ‘hour and a bit’ to complete before marking off the whole journey.

They completed the walk in stages, taking the strain off doing the whole thing in one go.

They had two cars with them, having one from where they started for the day, and another at a certain checkpoint a few miles away, then being able to drive back to the initial car, continuing this process until they finished it.

Anne said: “It’s taken us a little bit of time.

“We started in September last year and we have just been doing it in stages.”
