A CARLISLE hotel has been handed a 1 out of 5 food hygiene rating - meaning 'major improvement necessary' in some aspects of its food safety management.

The rating was handed to the famous Crown & Mitre in the city centre, which provides a hotel and guest house service along with a restaurant.

The Food Standards Agency have offered up the rating following an inspection on April 23.

The establishment's hygienic food handling - including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of food - was found to be of a 'very good' standard.

But some improvement is necessary in terms of the cleanliness and condition of the facilities, including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control.

And the standard of food safety management was said to require 'major improvement'.

This includes the systems or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat.

It also rates whether the inspectors believe the staff to have knowledge of food safety.
