A number of local amateur photographers managed to capture the beauty of the scene. One Twitter user, @rfj966, captured some shots and a quick video of the phenomenon.

He said: "After the rain, the sky caught fire tonight over Keswick. I thought Skiddaw was burning. It actually took my breath away."

Others replied to him in awe of the images he took: "Goodness, that is one stunning sky".

The photographer said he 'so nearly missed it all' so it was by luck he was there at the right time to take the beautiful images.
