Schoolboy boxer Mason Watson has been invited to be assessed by top England coaches.

It follows his progress to the final of the national championships.

Twelve-year-old Mason, from Border City Amateur Boxing Club, was beaten in last Sunday’s final against Simon O’Donnell from Pinewood Starr ABC in Wokingham.

But his run to the final has still earned the young Carlisle prospect the chance to impress England coaches.

He will attend four camps, starting next month, at England Institute of Sport’s boxing headquarters in Sheffield and assessed for their schoolboy academy pathway.

Coach Ian Archibald from Border City ABC said Mason was beaten in a “very close” bout as O’Donnell got the judges’ decision in the 34kg open class.

But he said the club was proud of Mason achieving number two status for his age and weight category in the country.

“We’re over the moon with Mason's progression since joining the club last year,” Archibald added.

“He’s gone on to have eight bouts for the club, picking up an MTK Box Cup silver and the England number two spot.”

Mason will be back in action tomorrow evening when Border City ABC holds its final show of the season at Harraby Catholic Club. Doors open from 6pm and the first bout is at 7.30pm.
