Theatre by the Lake have announced their upcoming season of visiting work alongside a new home produced show for their autumn season.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh, who has been a writer for films like In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, will be coming to the theatre in the autumn months.

The story is described as a dark comedy thriller following a mother and daughter in a country cottage in County Galway who face their own daily battles.

There is a back drop of heavy rain throughout the play and when an 'unexpected suitor' arrives it sets in motion a change of events that leads to a 'terrifying climax.'

Director Liz Stevenson said: "This is one of those stories that stays with you. A psychological drama-comedy that has grit, wit and unforgettable characters, it’s a real gift for a director.

"Though it was McDonagh’s first play, it was nominated for a plethora of awards, winning four Tonys, and has rightly become recognised as a modern classic.  It’s a thrill to be able and share this extraordinary play with our audiences."

A spokesperson described the show as being: "Hauntingly beautiful and blisteringly funny, it’s guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat."

There will also be a whole host of other events at the theatre including: musicals, comedies and talks.

The Tortoise and The Hare will be showing for younger children, Witch Hunt and at Christmas time The Ballad of Rudy.
