THIS year Dementia Action Week runs from May 16 and focusses on diagnosis and the positive difference that early diagnosis can make.

In support of this national campaign, Allerdale Dementia Action Alliance and Copeland Dementia Friendly Communities have planned two weeks of free events, held throughout West Cumbria, aimed at anyone living with dementia, worried about dementia or caring for someone with dementia.

The events include a combination of fun activities and support and advice sessions, and will be held across a variety of locations including Wigton, Millom, Whitehaven, Silloth, Cleator Moor amongst others.

Councillor Patricia Bell, cabinet member for health and care services, said: "These events come at an important time as diagnosis rates fall to a five-year low.

"Research shows that the misconception around memory loss being a sign of normal ageing is the biggest barrier to people seeking a dementia diagnosis.

"The events will offer advice and support to anyone effected by dementia, whilst also providing a variety of fun activities for those with dementia and their carers."

Cumbria County Council’s community development team are supporting the events and will be joined by a variety of local charities and partners to offer support and advice.
