CITY councillors will decide on plans to build a new hot food restaurant/takeaway and drive-thru in Carlisle.

Carlisle City Council received the application for planning permission this week from Custodian Real Estate Investment Limited.

The development, if approved by the planning panel, would see the construction of a restaurant/takeaway, drive-thru and car park on land at St Nicholas Retail Park.

Plans do not reveal which business will operate the site. The retail park currently hosts B&M, Poundland, Iceland, Halfords, Oak Furnitureland and The Gym Limited.

In supporting statements, the agent said that outdoor seating will be provided adjacent to the eastern elevation and the main customer entrance will face the existing retail terrace.

News and Star:

The public have been consulted on the proposal and the reaction has been generally positive, the agent said: “In principle, the majority of respondents supported the proposal, however two respondents commented to say how it should not be built and there are enough food/ takeaway places within Carlisle.”

The applicant has considered a number of sites for the fast food outlet, finding the London Road location to be the most logical.

“The principle of development has been deemed appropriate within the supporting planning and sequential assessment statement.”

They said that “the accompanying sequential assessment demonstrated a lack of suitable sites within defined centres.

“The proposal represents the best use of brownfield land in a sustainable location.”

Highway safety is not considered to be an issue if plans are approved. There will be no change to the existing vehicle access.

Two new electric vehicle charging points will be included in the works.
