This weekend a church in west Cumbria has hosted a Flower Festival as part of its 150th Anniversary.

St Mary's Church in Cleator unveiled the Flower Festival on Friday, May 13, with it being open to the public until Sunday, May 15.

Earlier in the year internationally renowned artist Conrad Atkinson, originally from Cleator Moor, donated a piece of his art to the church which is still on display now.

Father Paul Johnstone said: "It's a really happy, good, celebration for everybody and it's great to see people working and coming together from the various flower arranging groups in our Parish. They've done an amazing job and enjoyed working together.

"I think it's a good thing for the town as a whole and I hope it will make people visit St Mary's, because I don't think they'll believe how lovely it is."

Mayor Starkie said: "I think it's absolutely fantastic, some of the flower arranging and the work has really lightened up the church.

"It's great to see so many people turn out today so it has clearly caught the imagination of the community.

"Some of the workmanship in putting these arrangements together is exceptional. You can see for early on a Friday morning for so many people to turn up so I think it'll be like this for the next couple of days."

Conrad Atkinson's spouse Margaret Harrison was also in attendance at the Flower Festival. She shared with us a few words. She said: "I think that it's wonderful that they're recording things through these various events and the Flower Festival being one of them in terrific.

"Throughout 2022 people will be celebrating the anniversary and I would thing Conrad's grandfather would have had a lot to do with establishing this church, so the whole family have been involved in it.

"I think it's an appropriate place to have Conrad's work displayed."
