A SUSPENDED jail sentence has been handed to a 24-year-old Carlisle woman for what magistrates said was her 'wilful and persistent' failure to comply with a community order.

Holly Amber Cannar, of Caslin Way, admitted the offence as well as stealing a Parka jacket and trousers worth £52 from The Original Factory Shop in Wigton on November 22 last year and assaulting a police officer.

Magistrates also convicted her – in her absence – of stealing goods worth £530 from Cranstons at Orton Grange, south of Carlisle, on December 14 last year and a separate theft, committed on the same day, of stealing goods worth £562 from the Orton Grange gift shop.

Magistrates imposed 12 weeks jail, suspended for a year.

Explaining their sentence, magistrates sitting at the city’s Rickergate court said that the defendant was now working with the Probation Service and making progress and would lose her accommodation if jailed.

She must complete 15 days of rehabilitation. Cannar was represented by defence lawyer John Smith.

Her original community order was imposed for a spate of shoplifting offences, involving food and booze worth hundreds of pounds.
