PROTESTORS have assembled outside the Sellafield nuclear site.

Eight representatives from the Norwegian environmentalist group Neptune Network have gathered at the entrance to the site, and have piled up boxes at one of the gates.

They have gathered on a section of the nuclear transport railway line.

A spokesperson from the group said: “Neptune Network demands a halt in the reception of more nuclear waste at the plant.

“Since 2001, Neptune Network has carried out a number of actions against the facility.

“The plant has a lack of maintenance, little transparency, and has had several accidents and near misses.

“An accident with radioactive release into the air could have serious consequences for Norway.

“The safety situation at Sellafield is critical and it is therefore necessary to stop new intake immediately.

“Transparency and improvement of safety at the plant must follow quickly.

“Neptune Network demands that the British authorities take action, and urges the Norwegian state and the Norwegian people to reinforce this message.

“Neptune Network demands a full stop in receiving nuclear waste now!”

A Sellafield Ltd spokesman said: “We're aware of this pre-planned protest by the Neptune Network on public land close to the Sellafield site.

“Our policing colleagues will ensure this activity takes place safely and without undue disruption to the public or our operations.

“We are proud of our environmental performance and our role in ensuring the UK manages its nuclear legacy safely and responsibly.

“Like every other day, we will be focusing on our purpose: creating a clean and safe environment for future generations.”
