Schoolboy boxer Mason Watson will bid to become a national champion this weekend.

The Border City Amateur Boxing Club prospect, 12, will go for glory in the England Schoolboys national final in Oxfordshire.

It follows a fantastic performance in last weekend’s quarter-final at Carlisle’s Richard Rose Morton Academy.

Mason outboxed north east champion Billy Atkinson, from the TKO Kenton Boxing Club in Newcastle, in the 34kg division.

He got the nod from all three judges and now heads to the Spiceball Leisure Centre for the final on Sunday.

North west champion Mason received a bye in the semi-final draw, and will await the winner of the other semi-final as he bids to bring the title belt back to Cumbria.

“It was probably Mason’s best performance, in front of some great support,” said Border City ABC coach Ian Archibald of the quarter-final bout.

“He travels from Gretna four nights a week to train at Border City, as well as travelling all over for sparring.

“He’s a very dedicated young boxer and getting his just rewards, showing that what you put in you get out.

“To be down to the last two in England is a great achievement and everyone from the club will be shouting for Mason on Sunday.”

The fight will be live on the England Boxing YouTube channel.
