Promising Carlisle schoolboy boxer Mason Watson will go for national glory this weekend.

The 12-year-old from Border City Amateur Boxing Club is competing in the England schoolboy national quarter-finals on Sunday.

Mason will represent the club and the north west region when he takes on north east champion Billy Atkinson from Newcastle club Kenton ABC.

If he wins in the 34kg category bout, he will go on to box in the semi-finals and finals in Banbury next weekend.

This weekend’s quarter-finals will be held at Richard Rose Morton Academy in Carlisle at 12.30pm.

Coach Ian Archibald from Border City ABC said: “Mason has trained hard for this and been up to Scotland for some quality sparring.

“Mason will have great support as the whole club will be there supporting, plus family and friends.

“It’s great for the city to be holding such an event and I am sure there will be some top bouts as we have the best schoolboy boxers competing from the north west region, north east region and Yorkshire.”
