Carlisle City manager Jim Nichols hopes his team’s historic title victory will send a positive message throughout local football.

The Gillford Park club will be presented with the Northern League Division Two championship trophy tomorrow.

It caps a memorable season which City ended by sealing the title on the last day of the season.

It is a landmark achievement for the club, with Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson among those to send congratulations to City.

Nichols said the achievements of his team – who also won the Cumberland Cup recently – shows what is possible in this area.

“As someone who’s grown up in Carlisle, to win something in the national pyramid is huge,” he said.

“Hopefully it encourages people to come down and get involved.

“We had a decent crowd last weekend, people are taking an interest, and it’s nice for local lads to have an opportunity to play in the national pyramid.

“They’ve done really well. I think we only have three players over 25, and we’ve got some talented young lads here.

“They should be proud of their achievements. What they’ve done hasn’t been done before at this club or probably by many clubs in this area.

“It should send a positive message out there about what’s possible.”

City clinched the title on goal difference by beating Ryton and Crawcrook 3-0 last weekend, Heaton Stannington’s 2-2 draw with Easington Colliery meaning they were overtaken by the Cumbrians on the final afternoon.

The Northern League had taken the title trophy to Easington in the event of then leaders Heaton winning – but have now arranged a special presentation to City.

The silverware will be handed over at 3pm at Gillford Park tomorrow. Doors open at 2pm and the club say all are welcome to watch the ceremony.

City have had a high-scoring campaign and embarked on a superb winning run in the closing stages of the campaign.

Nichols said his players showed great character to get the job done, adding that City had proved a good next step for several who had dropped out of the professional game in recent ties.

“They’re quite a close bunch, and there’s a lot of belief in each other – plus a lot of ability as well,” he said.

“A lot of them have come through pro deals at clubs, a lot have come through Carlisle United.

“We’ve got a young group of lads who probably needed a couple of those moments during the season when things hadn’t gone right for us to almost reset and find what we’re good at.

“When we needed players to step up they have. We’ve got the second best defence in the league and we’re second top scorers, which probably tells you how our season’s gone.

“The work for next season starts now but I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved.”
